Basic Drywall


Drywall, aka wallboard, plaster board, gypsum board, Sheetrock.
The universal surface to panel, tile, or finish as you desire.
The basic components used in hanging drywall is the board itself, joint compound (the putty like mixture), tape, and nails/screws. For those experienced in hanging drywall, you'll be familiar with a straightedge, scoring knife, corner beads, various saws, and an assortment of floats and "spatulas."

There are many types of drywall including water-resistant greenboard, insulated wallboards, backer boards, and special boards for specific applications needed for fire resistance, sound acoustics, or durability.

The typical board comes 4' wide and range in length from 6' to 16'. They come in various thicknesses depending upon application from 1/4" to 5/8". To safely measure the job needed, take the area of the total surface to be done, subtract openings such as doorways and windows, and add 15% for extra areas and waste.
