Painting Outside
Outside, huh? What exactly are you painting? This should include treating wood.<
P>
- The house itself - brick, wood, siding, doors, frames,
etc.
- Things around the house - stairs, fences, posts,
concrete, etc.
- Other outside structures - sheds, animal houses, benches,
etc.
The House
Garages fit in this category since many are attached to the house.
Brick
- Use brick paint.
Wood
- Use an exterior latex paint or an enamel paint. Latex offers easier
clean-up while
enamel adds increased durability and performance at a higher price and cost
per usage.
Siding
- See WOOD if you have wood siding, otherwise use the
manufacturer's recommended
suggestions pending upon vinyl or aluminum siding. Generally, latex is used since
siding
usually comes pre-primed. If it comes unprimed, use a suitable vinyl or metal
primer followed
by the appropriate paint type.
Doors
- Painted doors should use a glossy enamel paint.
- Latex paints tend to mildew easier due to its water content and porous nature.
- Stained doors should be initially treated with an oil-based stain or varnish
followed by at least three coats of a polyurethane for lasting shine and
durability.
- When installing a new door, it is advisable to make necessary cuts (lock,
handle, hinges, etc.) prior to paint/staining. And paint it flat instead of hung,
you'll
find it makes your life easier.
